Discovery of VHE gamma rays from PKS 2005 – 489

چکیده
The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PKS 2005−489 (z = 0.071) was observed in 2003 and 2004 with the HESS stereoscopic array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. A signal was detected at the 6.7σ level in the 2004 observations (24.2 h live time), but not in the 2003 data set (27.3 h live time). PKS 2005−489 is the first blazar independently discovered by HESS to be an emitter of VHE photons, and only the second such blazar in the Southern Hemisphere. The integral flux above 200 GeV observed in 2004 is (6.9±1.0stat ±1.4syst)×10−12 cm−2 s−1, corresponding to ∼2.5% of the flux observed from the Crab Nebula. The 99% upper limit on the flux in 2003, I(>200 GeV) < 5.2 × 10−12 cm−2 s−1, is smaller than the flux measured in 2004, suggesting an increased level of activity in 2004. However, the data show no evidence for significant variability on any time scale less than a year. An energy spectrum is measured and is characterized by a very soft power law (photon index of Γ = 4.0 ± 0.4).

VHE Gamma Rays from PKS 2155 – 304
The close X-ray selected BL Lac PKS 2155–304 has been observed using the University of Durham Mark 6 very high energy (VHE) gamma ray telescope during 1996 September/October/November and 1997 October/November. VHE gamma rays with energy > 300 GeV were detected from this object with a time-averaged integral flux of (4.2 ± 0.7 stat ± 2.0 sys) × 10 −11 cm −2 s −1. There is evidence for VHE gamma r...

We report the discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the direction of the SNR G54.1+0.3 using the VERITAS ground-based gamma-ray observatory. The TeV signal has an overall significance of 6.8σ and appears pointlike given the resolution of the instrument. The integral flux above 1 TeV is 2.5% of the Crab Nebula flux and significant emission is measured between 250 GeV and 4 ...

In the recent years, the new generation of Imaging Atmospheric Čerenkov Telescopes successfully detected very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from a growing number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), mainly belonging to the blazar class. Among these recent results, we will mainly focus in this work on two recent discoveries made with the H.E.S.S. experiment: the tremendously active ...
متن کاملBlazar Discoveries with VERITAS
Blazars are among the most energetic and violent objects in the universe. By observing blazars at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) we can better understand blazar emission mechanisms, jet structure, black hole accretion and the extragalactic background light (EBL). VERITAS, an array of four 12-meter diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes, performs VHE studies of blazars through ...
